Student and New Professional Awards and Grants

CON-SNP Awards and Grants aim to recognize, promote and support the knowledge translation, education initiatives, research projects and networking efforts of undergraduate, Master's, Doctoral, and New Professional members of CON-RCO. Below are descriptions of the awards and grants available to CON-SNP members. 


Chapter Start Up Grant

Description

To offer Canadian Universities and Colleges the funds to launch a new or revamp an existing CON-SNP Chapter at their local institution. Developing a Chapter within your own region provides unique opportunities to bring together students and new professionals from a variety of obesity-related fields to participant in thought-provoking activities and networking events. Funds are allocated to assist in the expenses related to beginning a new Chapter, including materials for marketing and hosting an inaugural event (e.g.: guest speaker, food, room bookings, equipment rental etc.).

Eligibility

University and College groups who have not had a CON-SNP Chapter previously and who wish to initiate a Chapter OR a CON-SNP Chapter that has been inactive for the last two years and wishes become active again.

Application Process

Complete the application (CLICK HERE). Submit the application & required documents at least 2 months prior to the inaugural event. If your grant is approved, you will need to complete the Chapter Event Reimbursement Form to receive payment. NOTE: Reimbursements from the CON office will be made in one lump sum cheque to the chapter (bank account) or one individual representing the chapter. Deadline is March 1 of each year.  $250/chapter/academic year (maximum of 12 grants available per year)

Chapter Event Grant

Description

To help local chapters run exciting & innovative events and/or attract outstanding experts in obesity to come speak at their institutions, promoting knowledge dissemination and networking opportunities for trainees. Funds are used to cover expenses related to hosting the event (i.e. to cover costs of venue, AV equipment & snacks) or to cover travel expenses associated with bringing in a guest speaker (i.e. travel, accommodation, food for the guest speaker). Guest speaker honorariums will not be compensated.

Eligibility

All CON-SNP chapters are eligible to apply for the grant. Each chapter is eligible to receive up to one award per year (September 1 - August 31)

CON-SNP Rising Star Award

Description

This annual award recognizes an individual who has promoted the work of CON-SNP through individual work, Chapter initiatives, mentoring SNPs, speaking at CON or CON-SNP events, helping CON-SNP chapters or other similar activities.

Eligibility

  • An individual who has raised the profile of CON-SNP, either through individual work or through Chapter initiatives
  • A New Professional who has mentored SNPs, spoken at CON-SNP events, helped CON-SNP Chapters or other similar activities
  • A member of CON-SNP in good standing (self-nomination is accepted)

  • A short summary (1 page) of why the nominee is appropriate for this award

CON-SNP Champion Award 

Description

This annual award recognizes an active CON-SNP chapter (or individual who belongs to a CON-SNP chapter) who has promoted the work of CON-SNP.

Eligibility

Must be an active chapter (including submitted annual chapter report - Note: this is not applicable for new chapters)

Application process

Email the following to con.snp@gmail.com:
  • A Curriculum Vitae (if individual nomination)
  • A short summary (1 page) of why the nominated chapter (or individual) is an appropriate candidate
  • A description (no length limit) of past event(s) hosted

CON-SNP Faculty Supervisor Award 

Description

Students and new professionals may nominate their CON-SNP Chapter faculty supervisor who has demonstrated excellent mentorship in supporting their CON-SNP Chapter. This award aims to recognize a faculty member who excels  in nurturing trainee research development in his/her discipline and exhibits a passion for mentoring SNPs.

Application process

 Email the following to con.snp@gmail.com:
  • A letter of recommendation is to be submitted by the trainee (250 word maximum).
  1. Please include how you believe your supervisor/mentor has actively promoted excellence in education and research through excellence in supervision. Specific examples are encouraged.
  2. Trainee and faculty name should be clearly indicated, in addition, detailed contact information (email, phone number and mailing address).

Student Oral Presentations Awards

Description

To recognize the best oral presentations for PhD/PhD(c), Masters, and undergraduate categories of students and new professionals presenting at the CON Summit.

Eligibility

For all categories: undergraduate, Master's, Doctorate.

Submission Deadline

No application; decided at the Canadian Obesity Summit by a panel of experts.

Value

TBA cash prizes.

Student Poster Presentation Awards

Description

To recognize the best poster presentations for all categories of students presenting at the CON Summit.

Eligibility

For all categories: undergraduate, Master’s, and Doctorate /Doctoral candidate.

Obesity Summer School (formerly known as Obesity Boot Camp)

Description

The 11th Obesity Summer Summer School is open to 30 MSc/PhD students, young researchers, clinical fellows, clinical researchers and new professionals in their last year, or within five years of, completing their training. The Summer School will cover all aspects of obesity, ranging from epidemiology and public health to cell biology, energy regulation, clinical management and health policy.
The school will be held in Kananaskis, AB July 15-23, 2017.

Eligibility

Must be a full time student (MSc or Phd) or new professional (within 5 years of graduation).

Application Process

Consult the boot camp application form for current submission requirements - these may include the following: 
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A short 1-page summary of why the applicant should attend bootcamp
  • 1 letter of reference

Limited financial support available for Canadian applicants. Highest ranked Canadian applicants (full-time MSc or PhD students) may be eligible to receive a $2500 scholarship to cover costs
