Mental Health & Obesity 2014: Real World Weight Loss Program Implementation for Persons with Serious Mental Illness
Dr. Gail L. Daumit, MD, MHA, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore
We will describe our research program in behavioural weight loss for persons with serious mental illness attending one of ten outpatient psychiatric rehabilitation programs in Maryland. The tailored eighteen month intervention included individual and group weight management counselling, physical activity classes, and healthy changes to meals served. The intervention team trained mental health program staff to deliver physical activity classes using a video. In the subsequent study, we are training mental health program staff to lead physical activity classes. Opportunities and challenges for implementing these types of behavioural lifestyle intervention programs across community mental health settings will be discussed.
